Instrumental Music

AMI 101

This course is designed to introduce students to traditional concert band instruments. This course emphasizes the performance of music at a level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use.

AMI 201

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history. This course has an increased focus on the use of technology with music.

AMI 3M1

The Grade 11-university/college music curriculum is designed to broaden the students’ knowledge and skills in performance, composing, arranging, listening and analysis, music in society, and music and technology. It emphasizes the appreciation, analysis and performance of various kinds of music. Students perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire, compose and arrange their own music, and analyse live and recorded performances. This course is performance-based, and although performance is a unit unto its own, it is expected that performance be infused in all units of study at this grade level. Students also continue to explore possible careers in or related to music.

AMI 4M1

This course emphasizes the appreciation, analysis, and performance of music from the Twentieth Century, including art music, jazz, popular music, and Canadian and non-Western music. Students will concentrate on developing interpretive skills and the ability to work independently. They will also complete complex creative projects. This course is designed to broaden students’ knowledge and skills in performance, composing and arranging, listening and analysis, music in society, and music and technology. Students concentrate on developing their skills through the performance of complex technical exercises and repertoire, composition and arrangement of their own music, listening and analysis of live and recorded music, and complex creative projects completed through the use of technology, as well as conventional methods. This course is performance-based, will be infused in all units of study at this grade level.

AMR2OB, AMR3MB and AMR 4MB

These focus courses in Music Repertoire will provide students with the opportunity to learn an increasingly complex and extensive repertoire for their instrument. They will continue to develop their sight-reading, presentation, and performance skills, as well as various styles through listening and analysing selected works.

Vocal Music

AMV 201

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology, and history. This focus course in vocal music will provide students with the opportunity to learn vocal music skills in intonation, projection, tone quality, breath control and diction. Students will also have the opportunity to learn to sing 3 and 4 part repertoire, to read perform and appreciate music as well as to continue their study of music theory, history and analysis.

AMV 3M1

This focus course in vocal music will provide students in the college/ university course with the opportunity to learn to further refine their vocal music skills. Students will also have the opportunity to learn challenging repertoire as they continue their study of music theory, history and analysis.

This focus course in vocal music will provide students with the opportunity to learn to further refine their vocal music skills. Students will also have the opportunity to learn challenging repertoire as they continue their study of music theory, history and analysis.
