LWGBD1 -  German Level 1, Open

The German Level 1 open course is an introductory course that emphasizes the language knowledge and communication skills that students will need to function effectively in the German language.  This course allows the student to speak and understand the German language through a wide variety of activities that include dialogues, giving directions, asking and answering questions and presentations.  Using basic vocabulary and language structures, students will express ideas and opinions in complete but simple sentences in structured and open-ended situations. Students will write songs, descriptive paragraphs, letters, comic strip dialogues and they will also create a poster, brochure and story board in German.

LWIBD1 - Italian Level 1, Open

The Italian Level 1 open course is an introductory course appropriate for those students wishing to acquire proficiency in the language for personal or future professional reasons, such as travel or business.  Students learn to communicate effectively and accurately in Italian as it is spoken and written today.  Practice is given in all four skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing.  Students will learn to speak and understand Italian through a wide range of activities that include presentations, dialogues, asking and answering questions, giving directions and skits.  Students will read and demonstrate and understanding of a variety of simple texts.  They will write songs, letters, comic strip dialogues, descriptive paragraphs and they will also create a poster story board and brochure in Italian.

FSF1D - Grade 9 Academic French

This course emphasizes the development of oral communication, reading and writing skills.  Students will enhance their ability to understand and speak French through a wide range of activities that include dialogues, giving directions, asking and answering questions and presentations.  They will read short stories, poems, newspaper and magazine articles, letters, descriptions, captions and reports.  They will also write songs, create a Web page, mystery game and dramatize a scene from their own monster movie. 

FSF1P - Grade 9 Applied French

This course emphasizes the development of oral communication, reading and writing skills through practical applications and concrete examples using a broad-based theme such as the media.  Students are given frequent opportunities to experience and use the concept being studied through a wide range of activities that include presentations, asking and answering questions, giving directions and dialogues.  Students will read letters, captions, instructions, comic strips, newspaper and magazine articles that are fairly short so that they can grasp the general idea quickly.  The readings serve as models for oral and written work.  Students will write songs, descriptive paragraphs, letters, newspaper articles and comic strip dialogues.  They will also create a Web page, poster, brochure and Story board.

FSF2D - Grade 10 Academic French

This course enables students to integrate the four language skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing and deepen their understanding and appreciation of francophone culture around the world.  Students will enhance their ability to comprehend and speak French through a wide variety of activities that include presentations, asking and answering questions, dialogues, skits and giving directions.  They will read short stories, newspaper and magazine articles, descriptions, poems and reports.  They will also write songs, create a menu for a new ethnic restaurant, describe their childhood, participate in a baby photo contest, create a radio or television commercial, role-play a conversation between a teenager and a counselor at a phone-in centre and create a guide highlighting the culture of a community.

FSF3U - Grade 11 French, University Preparation

This course promotes the extensive development of French-language skills.  The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French are emphasized throughout the course.  Students consolidate their oral skills through a wide range of activities that include the discussion of literature, culture and current issues.  They will read short stories, newspaper and magazine articles and answer questions on the content of a short novel.  They will also write an independent research report on a French artist and a Francophone country, create a poster about the importance of self-acceptance, healthy eating habits and exercise, compare the responsibilities of teenagers in Canada and propose a plan of action to solve a world problem.

FSF4U - Grade 12 French, University Preparation

This course includes a variety of themes that promote extensive development of French-language skills.  Students consolidate their oral skills through a wide range of activities that include the discussion of literature, culture and current issues.  The use of correct grammar and appropriate language conventions in both spoken and written French are emphasized throughout the course.  Students will read short stories, newspaper and magazine articles and answer questions on the content of a short novel.  They will also write a newspaper article and a résumé for a job, create a poster about technological advances and present an advertisement for a new foreign language course for adult beginners.
